Cut Costs. Protect Public Health and Local Vulnerable Communities.\nPhiladelphia spends millions every year managing waste. \nAlmost nothing prevents it. \nAt the same time\, food and beverage businesses are required to purchase single-use packaging that increases operating costs and contributes to pollution that disproportionately impacts Black and Brown communities where waste is processed and incinerated. \nThere may be a better\, less wasteful way — and it saves money and protects public health. \nPhilly Unwrapped is bringing together restaurant owners\, cafés\, caterers\, corner stores\, food trucks\, event venues\, hospitality operators\, community leaders\, and public officials to explore practical waste prevention strategies that work in Philadelphia. \nWhat This Is\nJoin ECHO Systems\, The Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia\, Rethink Disposable’s Clean Water Fund and Trash Academy in this informative and engaging community event. \nLearn How to Use the Philly Unwrapped Community Waste Reduction Toolkit — a free\, practical resource designed specifically for local food-sector businesses. \nCase studies show that businesses implementing reuse and waste prevention strategies save between $3\,000–$22\,000 annually\, while reducing trash volume\, improving operational efficiency\, and strengthening customer loyalty. \nAttendees will be able to join a funding consortium to demonstrate business need and interest in supporting a just transition toward reuse and waste prevention. \nThis event includes a community listening session. We want to hear directly from residents and business owners about concerns\, barriers\, and opportunities as we work to attract funding and build a just transition. \nWho Should Attend\n\nRestaurant\, café\, and food truck owners\nCaterers and event operators\nCorner store and grocery operators\nHospitality managers\nCommunity leaders and residents\nInstitutions and neighborhood organizations\n\nWe warmly invite City Councilmembers\, local representatives\, community development corporations\, business improvement districts\, and neighborhood organizations to join this conversation. Advancing waste prevention presents an opportunity to strengthen fiscal stewardship\, support local businesses\, and protect public health — and we look forward to working together to explore what that can look like for Philadelphia. \nWhat You’ll Walk Away With\n\nClear\, implementable cost-saving strategies\nAccess to the free Philly-specific Toolkit\nEarly information about upcoming grant opportunities and how to participate in the funding consortium\nConnections to a growing network of local businesses and partners\nAn opportunity to help shape future funding and policy priorities\n\nThis is not a lecture. It’s a practical working session focused on real-world solutions. \n  \nFunding provided by EPA Region 3’s Thriving Communities – Green & Healthy Homes Initiative. \nWith support from the Story of stuff project and a generous match from Jeffery A Miller catering \nCoffee provided by High Point Cafe.

SUMMARY:Virtual Philly Unwrapped: Cut Waste. Cut Costs.
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Philly Unwrapped: Cut Waste. Cut Costs. Protect Public Health and Local Vulnerable Communities.\nMay 11th | Virtual 4:30-6:00 pm\nClick here to register for free.\nPhilly Unwrapped is a coalition-driven initiative working to establish a city-wide reuse system in Philadelphia. Our work is focused on reducing single-use waste\, protecting public health\, and creating the conditions for reuse to become standard practice across our city’s businesses\, institutions\, and communities. \nWe invite you to register for our second virtual session on May 11th from 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM (A zoom link will be sent out when you register). This gathering is part of a six-part series that includes two additional in-person sessions. Each convening is an opportunity to deepen our collective understanding\, strengthen partnerships\, and move this work forward together. \nThis session will focus on two areas: \n\nFirst\, we will examine the business case for reuse. Participants will share real examples of organizations transitioning away from single-use packaging and serviceware\, including the financial savings\, operational considerations\, and the impact on customer health and community trust.\nSecond\, Trash Academy will lead a community engagement session where participants are invited to share their own questions\, barriers\, and considerations around reuse adoption. This is an important part of our process. Building a system that works for Philadelphia requires honest input from the organizations and communities who will be part of it.\n\nWe are asking anchor institutions\, businesses\, neighborhood associations\, CDCs\, BIDs\, chambers\, and community organizations to register\, attend\, and stay engaged. This work depends on sustained participation from across the city. \n  \nBest Regards\, \nPartners and Collaborators\, \nECHO Systems \nThe Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia \nTrash Academy \nRethink Disposable\, a project of Clean Water Fund \nAnd the Philly Unwrapped Coalition \nFunding support provided by EPA Region 3 Thriving Communities.
